The first store in town was established by Leland Stanford in 1881. In 1910, Kirkland had a population of 10 people and a post office with three letters. In 1935, Kirkland's economy shifted towards agriculture as local farmers developed large acreage for corn and other crops. The city experienced its biggest growth period during World War II when thousands of workers fromPortland returned to help out with war production efforts. After 1945, however, many small businesses closed up shop as competition from neighboring towns grew stronger. The city's largest economic development came after an investment by entrepreneur Don Bechtel in 1969 that created what has come to be known as "Bechtel Place." At that time Kirkland had about 30 businesses employing over 500 workers- including several restaurants and stores which remain active today within the city limits or adjacent suburbs (such as Beaverton). Kirkland is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 24,653 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of King County and lies on the eastern edge of Seattle. The first permanent settler in what would become Kirkland was David Thompson in 1851. He founded a farm near present-day Pioneer Square and named it Park View after his home country, Scotland. The first school in Kirkland was constructed on land donated by Mr. Thomson in 1855; it was destroyed by fire in 1865. In 1861, John Butterfield established a flour mill on site and named it after himself; the mill continued to operate until 1922. In 1870, George Aitken erected a log cabin on what is now Main Street for his wife Catherine Aitken and their three children: Anna (1870-1971), John (1871-1927), and Alexander (1872-1964). The Aitken family also operated an adjoining store from 1875 through 1907 with its own shopfront down Second Avenue until that business burned down during World War II. In 1886, James Irvine opened the first grocery store west of Seattle at Sixth Avenue South and Union Street; he called it "Irvine's". Stores followed soon thereafter including one by Gustavus Wessels which still stands today at Ninth Avenue South and Union Street NE within blocks of where Irvine started out – just across from modern day Safeco Field! Ivanhoe Woolen Mill & House built 1888 became Kirkland's first brick building when ownership changed hands multiple times over time including becoming part of Safeco Field development in 1969 before finally being sold to Friends of Kirkland Park Foundation who restored it as part of park expansion plans in 1978–1979 In 1902 Harry Henson purchased Ivanhoe Woolen Mill & House which had been abandoned since 1893 but remained standing until it caught fire December 29th 2002 destroying most everything inside along with 4 acres adjacent to property line . Prior to this fire there were no reports or pictures of any such fires happening around town so we can only attribute this accident as arson due to lack evidence
