Kirkland was founded in 1853 by Danish immigrants Chas. Sorensen and his wife Karen Jensen as a fishing village on the east side of Lake Washington. The town had a population of just over 100 people when it incorporation as a city in 1907; its growth led to the addition of several blocks to the north along First Avenue between Superior and Jackson streets (now Mercer Street) that became known as South Kirkland until 1965 when those blocks were annexed into Bellevue. In 1959, Microsoft founder Bill Gates moved from Seattle to nearby Redmond and set up his own computer company there called Microsoft Research; he named his new campus North Kirkland after his wife's family farm near their home on Mercer Street in South Kirkland. That same year South Kirkland lost its status as an annexation by Bellevue when Microsoft sold its holdings back to its original owners – including much of what is now South Park Blocks – for $620,000 cash plus real estate values associated with them which made it possible for Redmond to keep their building without having to demolish any buildings or lose any land. The history of Kirkland began with Swedes who settled in what is now Kirkland in 1854. The Swedes were farmers who cultivated land near what is now downtown Kirkland. They started a school and built a church soon after their arrival. By 1890, when Tacoma annexed Kirkland, people from both cities had mixed together and there wasn't enough space for everyone in either city. So, on July 1st, 1889, Tacoma took over all responsibility for Kirek-LAND (the name given to the area south of First Avenue between Magnolia Boulevard and Interstate 405) from its original inhabitants - the Swedes. Today, there are many businesses that date back to before 1900 including: J H Smith & Sons Auctioneers Co., which still operates out of one of downtown's buildings; Mrs Cramer's Bakery; Eckerd Oil Refinery; Wabash Coal Company; Storch Lumber Company Ltd.; Malevich Glass Works Inc.; Pacific Telephone & Telegraph Company (PCTC); American Telephone & Telegraph Company (AT&T) - which used to be headquartered at 9th Avenue South and Main Street before it moved to Federal Way; United States Post Office (USPO). There are also several schools that have been part of the community since before World War II such as: Central High School (founded 1922), Eastern Washington University (opened 1963), Everett Community College District #2 Annex School Building (#5) and Kokomo Senior High School (#1). One important aspect that has not changed over time is agriculture – although many businesses have closed down due to competition or changing technology – farming remains an important component of local life today. Farmers continue to produce crops like wheat, corn, soybeans and fruit trees; along with providing goods like milk products, eggs or meat to locals as well as selling services such as farm work or lawn care service. Today's residents are typically descendants of those who first set foot on these shores more than 150 years ago!
