Army gift history in Lacey, Washington goes back to the early 1800s. The Lacey Post of October 1, 1847 reported on an event that took place at Fort George Vancouver. Captain John W. Griggs and his regiment of cavalry were on their way to relieve General Nelson A. Miles’ brigade at the fort when they were met by a party of Indians who had been sent to meet them. Griggs ordered his men not to fire upon the Indians but instead delivered them into custody. This event is generally considered to be the beginning of the military presence in Lacey. According to local legend, a group of soldiers from Company F, 2nd Kessock Regiment (now 3rd Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment) took up residence in what is now known as “The Castle” around this time. The soldiers were there until 1855 when they were replaced by the Umatilla Indian Scouts from Lacey under Colonel Augustus Crainer. In 1861, Camp Troup was established in town which served as Headquarters for all Army troops west of Puget Sound including those stationed in Olympia and Walla Walla Valley areas during the Civil War Period In 1865, after the war ended and most troops had left for home, Camp Troup was disbanded and its buildings used as a warehouse by Lacey post office until it closed down in 1934 Lasley Post Office opened on July 1, 1892 with Mrs. Hilda Jahn serving as first female postal employee In 1924 Camp Troup reopened as Fort George Vancouver Memorial Park The currentFort George Vancouver Memorial Park was built between 1975-1977 using funds provided by donations from community members Today army gifts are often donated by individuals or businesses in order to recognize someone's military service or dedication

Wittell bought land along the river and founded Lacey Landing with his wife Anna Maria and their two children, George and Lillie (later Mrs. Allyn). Wittell renamed his settlement after his sister-in-law who had married him there in 1851, Martha Washington Cowles. The milling industry dominated Lacey until it closed in 1906 because of low demand from farmers for flour made from wheat germ, malt, baking soda and other products exported to markets around the world. When Interstate 5 was built through Wenatchee Valley in 1959, most of what is now Lacey became part of Seattle County; however, a small amount of land east of I-5 remained within Wenatchee Valley which has been used for farming since before white settlers arrived there in 1800. Today much of this acreage remains unincorporated rural farmland that is home to many local horses and cows as well as some smaller businesses that are important to its economy such as tourism/ hospitality services and research institutes/universities. A few homes have been torn down over time but most have been rebuilt or modified into new homes that are still considered historic by locals living here today
