The Lacey Coast Guard Station was established in 1933. The station is located on the mouth of the Kitsap River and its primary mission is to protect the coast and maritime interests of Lacey, WA. The Coast Guard Station has a fleet of six boats that patrol the river as well as an unmanned buoy watch system. There are also three helicopters used for search and rescue purposes. The Coast Guard Station offers a variety of gift items for purchase or donation including commemorative plates, mugs, T-shirts, hats, wallets and more. In addition to gifts, the Coast Guard Station also provides educational opportunities for children between the ages of 6-14 years old about maritime safety and protecting our coastline. Throughout its history, the Coast Guard Station has received donations from many people in return for their support. Some of these donations have included money donated to help with equipment purchases or repairs, supplies such as fishing gear or boat parts, or even just time spent at the station while helping out! Lacey was founded in 1853 by Captain Lewis A. Lacey, a fur trader who sailed down the Columbia River. The town grew rapidly thanks to its natural resources and its location at the head of navigation on the Snake River. By 1865, Lacey had become an important trading post on the route between Seattle and Portland. In 1872, Lacey became part of what is now called Oregon when that state was created from parts of Washington and Idaho. In 1907, Lacey was renamed for General Charles A. Dix following his victory at Bull Run Bridge over the Little Spokane River. As part of World War I efforts to supply the war effort with oil and other materials, Lacey became one of several towns in Washington to receive supplies from Canada. After World War II, Lacey experienced rapid growth as a result of its status as an airfield for Boeing Airlines' aircraft manufacturing plants in Tillamook Bay and nearby North Bend. However, during the late 1990s it lost its importance as a commercial center due to population changes and development elsewhere in Lacey or within a few miles of town limits
