The first store in Lacey was started by a man named John Shearer and his wife Jane. Mrs. Shearer made many donations to help start the town, including a lot on the east side of town that became the original Courthouse Square. In 1872, Mr. and Mrs. Shearer’s son, Abram Shearer opened the first post office in Lacey and donated land for a public square on top of which he built himself a home. When Lacey officially went into existence as a community in 1879, it had 4 stores, 1 school, 2 churches (one Congregational and one Methodist), 1 Masonic Lodge No. 8 (the first lodge in Tacoma), 1 cemetery (later amended to include Saint Augustine’s Cemetery), 3 library branches (2 private and 1 public) with over 100 volumes total subscribed to at one time or another during its history! Lacey is a small town located in Walla Walla County, Washington. It is known for its natural resources and the Lacey River which provides drinking water to the town. The population of Lacey was 1,812 as of the 2010 census. Lacey was founded in 1873 by young men from Oregon who were looking for a new home after the Civil War. The original settlers were Englishmen and they named their town after one of their families, Lady Lacey.
