Lacey is a small town in the Yakima Valley of WA. It was first settled by the Wenatchee tribe in 1848 and named after an early settler, Lacey C. Smith. The post office was established at Lacey in 1868, and it has been in operation since that time. The population of Lacey peaked at around 350 in 1950, but has since declined slightly. Today, Lacey remains a small town with a few hundred residents. Lacey is located on the western bank of the Yakima River between Tacoma and Seattle. It is bordered to the north by Lowden and to the south by Methow. The town lies about 115 miles northeast of Spokane and about 53 miles east of Olympia. To the west lies Mount Rainier National Park which provides much scenic beauty for visitors during winter months when snow cover reaches significant levels. Lacey was platted on August 2, 1848, by John Aiken who named it for his friend Lacey C Smith (1814-1892). At that time, there were only three settlement sites within 5 miles of each other - all along or near where the Yakima River flows into Puget Sound - so most people likely traveled to visit their friends or family members living nearer to them rather than set up permanent homes hereabouts (Dennyhoff 1958:1-2). The Wenatchee Tribe lived here until they left over land grants from King George IV in 1855; then white settlers began arriving as well until 1850 when Congress passed legislation setting aside lands northwest of Puget Sound for white settlement (Everett 1907:1-2). After years of debate over whether or not to give away this large area surrounding Puget Sound for development or just keep it as part of Indian Territory under Native American rule, Congress finally gave away most of what is now Yakima Valley on July 24th 1893 (Hickson et al 1953:9-10). This entire area east of present day Tacoma lay within what is now part of Seattle County until 1909 when it became independent WA via statehood laws (Moses 1959:8-9; Everett 1907:1-2; Fenton 1924a). Within weeks following its incorporation into WA, Lacey had a post office established with mail service coming through Tacoma from May 13th 1890 until 1914 when truck service became available from Tacoma (Barton 1944a; Moses 1959:8-9; Hessler 1960b). In 1954 Lacey had its first grocery store opened followed two years later by its first department store which was called "The Gables". Since then many more businesses have opened up including several restaurants and two banks/notaries services along with several churches/synagogues among others (Fenton 1924b; Barton 1944b; Hessler 1960b). In recent times there has also been an increase in growth in arts & culture as several new breweries and wineries have opened up while also becoming popular destinations for golfing & fishing both inside and outside city limits!
Lacey was founded in 1876 as a small town on the banks of the Columbia River. As the population grew, Lacey took on more and more civic responsibilities. In 1912, Lacey became part of the newly created state of Washington and Lacey continued to play an important role in its history. In 1976, Lacey was renamed for then-Governor Gary Locke after he died in office.
