Lacey is a census-designated place in Grant County, Washington. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. Lacey is located on the Wenatchee River east of Issaquah. The first white person to settle in Lacey was Elias Jameson in 1865. He and his family arrived from Illinois and started a store on Main Street. By 1871, the Jamesons had bought land east of town and built a home there. In 1872, they sold their land to John Aiken and his family who also started a store on Main Street. In 1875, Jens Christensen opened a grocery store on First Avenue in Lacey which became the nucleus of what would become the local commercial corridor that exists today. By 1903, all stores were consolidated under one roof when Joe Gibbs opened his hardware store at 7th & Main Streets which remains an important part of the community today. In 1906, post office was established at Lacey with Wm Henson as Postmaster. In 1907, voters passed an ordinance providing for school districts within Grant County and setting up school boundaries there were two such districts - that led to Lacey becoming one of only four towns in Washington (and only Spokane) to have its own high school district (the others being Pullman, Seattle Heights and Kirkland). The second incarnation of Lacey High School began operations in 1909; it burned down less than three years later but reopened with new construction in 1912 after appeals by community organizers brought about by journalist Cleo Thomas-Dixon.. It wasn’t until 1922 that Grays Harbor High School moved into its current building across from Interstate 5 just north of downtown Lacey – Grays Harbor having been founded as Snohomish High School nearby back in 1915 (though originally intended for students living near Everett). Lacey experiences several name changes throughout its history: “Lacrosse” (1895), “Lenora” (1901), “Ida” (1907), “Grays Harbor” (1920), “Lacy” (1922), etc.; however most residents retain their hometown appellation throughout their lives even if they don't always use it publicly!
