Lacey, Washington is a small town in the state of Washington. The population was 1,686 at the 2000 census. Lacey is located in the Whitman County seat and it is part of the Yakima metropolitan area. It was founded in 1853 as a station on the Lewis and Clark Expedition and named for General James Laney. Lacey is one of only a few towns in Washington that remain undeveloped. The other two are Quincy, Oregon and Wenatchee, Washington. Lacey has been home to its own school system since 1923 and its own post office since 1907. It has also been home to several businesses including Lacey Cotton Gin Company, which made cotton gin ropes before fiber optic cables became available; Republican Printing Presses from 1907-1970; Wagon Wheel Tire & Rubber Co.; Klyve Paper Packing Co.; Lacey Schools et al., all of which continue to operate today. Lacey had an economy based primarily on agriculture until after World War II when manufacturing began to take hold due to increased demand for fabric produced by Lacey's many businesses. In recent years however, tourism has become an important part of the local economy as have services such as accounting and programming support for radio stations in Yakima Valley Lasley Aluminum company established operations here too
