The Lakewood National Guard has a long history in the community. The first national guard unit was organized in Lakewood on July 5, 1916, and served until September 1, 1917. The first battalion of the National Guard was raised in Lakewood on November 3, 1918. In 1933, the first national guard unit was stationed in Tacoma. The battalion was redesignated as the 9th Battalion Washington National Guard on February 14, 1934. On October 20, 1938, the battalion was again redesignated as the 12th Battalion Washington National Guard. On January 1, 1959, the 12th Battalion Washington National Guard Headquarters and Headquarters Company were moved to Tacoma from Olympia and became part of District #1 ofthe 25th Infantry Division headquartered at Fort Lewis Army Base. On October 20, 1978 District #1 ofthe 25th Infantry Division relocated to Spokane and 11th Battalion Washington State National Guard (Air Defense) replaced District #1 at Fort Lewis Army Base District #2 ofthe 25th Infantry Division took over for District #1 at Fort Lewis Army Base on November 3rd 1978 In 1990 11 th BattalionWashington StateNationalGuard (Air Defense)was disbanded due to budget cuts
Lakewood is a town in Chelan County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,848 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of the seven cities in Chelan County. The name Lakewood comes from the word "lak" meaning "lake" and "wool" because of its location on a small body of water called Lake Woolcott. At one time there were many mills in and around this area but all have since closed down. Today there are a few businesses that operate out of local homes, primarily providing goods for local farmers markets. The first inhabitants of what is now Lakewood were Native American people who had lived here for centuries before European settlers arrived in 1792. The first white settler was George Mason who purchased land near what is now downtown from the powerful fur trader Simon Fraser. Mason named his new land Kirkland after himself and his father-in-law, Colonel David Kirkland (a member of Fraser's forces). In 1875, when Tacoma became a city, Lakewood became part of Tacoma and its residents struggled to keep up with growing numbers within their own town limits. In 1916, the community voted to secede from Tacoma and become an independent village under the name lakewood village (). After years of struggle, they finally joined together with other villages to form Pierce County in 1978. As recently as 2008, most residents still spoke only English at home despite efforts by both sides to promote bilingual education among their children in classes funded by state legislature through special appropriations each year. However recent events have shown that even though English may bethe primary language spoken by most people today within Lakewood Village (), there are also sizable groups who identify as German or Italian-American heritage which continue to use their respective languages at home without any problem.. One such group has been working hard to revive old German pulp mill buildings located along US 6 just east of town center which date back to 1918 when Seattle Tract No 1 was acquired including these mills; however it looks like progress may be stalled for another decade or more due to lack of funding Lakewood is located about halfway between Olympia and SeaTac on Interstate 90A northbound and southbound access roads providing quick access into both towns while I-90A provides an escape route away from town during rush hours making it easy for drivers travelling into either town not wanting TO go anywhere else until they can get out again .. Lakewood is a town in King County, Washington, United States. It was created in 1853 from parts of the earlier communities of Lakewood and Vedalia. The population was 7,781 at the 2010 census. The first settler in what would become Lakewood was John A. Hinson who arrived in 1847. He named his land "Hinson Township" after himself and his father-in-law James Hill. The name may have been taken from a nearby lake called Watkins Creek which was mentioned by Captain George Vancouver in 1792 while on his exploration of the Pacific Northwest. In 1853, following the Lewis and Clark Expedition, General Ulysses S. Grant conducted an inspection tour of Washington Territory and selected the area for incorporation as a town under the name Vedalia in honor of Secretary of War William Higginson (the namesake for Vedalia). Lakewood's first mayor was Hiram Bogan and its first treasurer were Augustus Fiske and Lucius Wellman. The townsite had a total population of 2,000 people when it became incorporated on December 15, 1853. The construction of the Union Pacific Railroad began soon after incorporation with branches reaching into both directions through what is now downtown Lakewood with tracks running parallel to each other for about one mile (1 km). This created traffic jams that lasted all week long during busy season rush hours! In 1865–66 work started on building a new terminal at 116th Avenue NE which eventually doubled as Union Station before being torn down in the early 1990s to make way for apartment buildings that still stand today across 116th Avenue NE from Pioneer Square Park
