The museum has an extensive collection of aircraft, vehicles, weapons and other military items that have been given to the USAF or its allies. One of the earliest examples of air force gift giving was in World War I when the United States donated four Curtiss JN-4D Jenny bombers to Great Britain. Longview is a small town in Washington County, Oregon, United States. The population was 281 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland–Vancouver metropolitan area. The first white people to visit Longview were prospectors looking for coal near the shore of Juan de Fuca Strait in 1848. They named their new community after General James Longstreet, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and been promoted to general because of his victories over Mexican forces on the battlefields of Monterrey and Buena Vista. In 1859, Captain George Vancouver and his men arrived from British Columbia with stories of a great gold mine in what is now central Oregon. They induced some local farmers to lease them land for mining purposes, but it was not until 1861 that word got out about this fabulous find and lumbermen began arriving from all over the country to check out what they were talking about. In 1865, Congress passed an act authorizing President Abraham Lincoln to create a military post at Longview on Puget Sound so that troops could be stationed during the Civil War. The post opened in 1865 and quickly developed into one of America’s most important strategic positions between Seattle and Portland – one which saw heavy fighting during both world wars. After World War II, Longview grew rapidly as families migrated here from all over the United States looking for opportunities for work in agriculture or industry; many brought their children with them when they moved away from home. Thanks to continued growth and development by locals as well as developers throughout the years, Longview has seen significant changes both socially and economically since its incorporation into our local government as a village in 1959! Langley was founded in 1881 by Captain George Langley, who had come overland from England as part of the first wagon train to enter the United States. The town grew rapidly, and by 1907 it had a population of 1,500. In 1909, Langley became the county seat of Thurston County and remained so until 1959. In the 1920s and 1930s, Langley was home to several large aluminum companies. One such company, Alcoa, left in 1957 after its acquisition of American Electric Power Company (AEP). Many other businesses also relocated to Langley during this time period; including Safeway Supermarket and Jiffy Lube Service Station.
