Longview is a town in eastern Washington, United States. The population was 5,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Spokane metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Longview was Captain George Vancouver on July 24, 1792. He named it "Vancouver's Landing" after his ship, the "Nova Scotia". The first permanent settler in present day Longview was Nathaniel Stanwood who arrived in 1812. Stanwood built a log cabin and later developed an agriculture venture that included raising chickens and pigs. In 1824, another man by the name of John Stevens arrived at what is now Longview and began building a house on land he acquired from Stanwood. Stevens became known as the Father of Longview due to his many contributions to the town including founding the school system, creating roads and bridges, and developing most of its infrastructure. In 1859-60 three brothers founded what would become Pacific Electric Railway which connected Tacoma with Seattle via Spokane Falls Additionally one brother founded The Spokes Store which still stands today within walking distance of both schools and post office
