Longview is a small town in Yakima County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It lies along the east bank of the Yakima River and is bordered by Thurston to the north, Asotin to the east, and Spokane to the south. The first settler in Longview was George and Martha Whitman who came there in 1855. The town was named after John A. Long who surveyed the area for Puget Sound Fur Company in 1854-5. In 1865, when Gold Rush fever hit Longview and other towns near Yakima River Valley, many people fled to Tacoma or Seattle because of rumors of goldfields beyond their settlements. However, no gold found was reported until 1898 when prospectors discoveredroyalty at Gold Hill on land that had been claimed by Treaty 7 Indian Tribe since 1792 but never developed as a result of lack of interest from white settlers. In 1907–1908 developer Fenton McMillin built what became known as McMillin's Mill which produced flour for local markets and shipped out through Tacoma. After World War I it grew into a cotton gin with 400 employees producing 98% of all Northwest cottonseed yarn before Marketing Board regulations forced its closure in 1928; however milltown spirit continues to be alive today with various businesses located downtown such as The Shop (a grocery store), Ponderosa Pizza & Brewing Co., Gilded Cage Theatre (an art theater), CenturyLink Field (an American football stadium), and numerous restaurants including Chili’s Grill & Bar and BBQ Place (now Fatburger). A post office operated at Longview from 1907 until 1912; it was renamed White Pass after mail carrier Phebe Hixson whose husband died during an avalanche on Mt Rainier while en route from White Pass Station in Glacier National Park to his family's farm downriver about two miles west of LongVIEW along Clearwater Creek.. In 1919 Anacortes Post Office opened at what is now Anacortes Naval Shipyard off HWY 522 close to where Lighthouse Point stands today; it closed 1963 due to low population growth rates being more important priorities within USPS then larger communities like Anacortes which were closer to jobsites ashore while our Kwinana operations handled large numbers of international mail shipments.. In 1975 Kitsap County established a new post office called Lone Pine outside Longview limits although ZIP code 98007 remains unchanged despite moves inland over time...
