Longview is a town in the Yakima Valley, in Washington. It was founded by fur traders in 1847. The first post office was established at Longview in 1848. In 1860, it became the county seat of King County. The population of Longview grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s and peaked at over 100,000 in 1910. However, growth slowed after World War II and the collapse of the Northwest lumber industry; Longview's population fell to about 10,000 by 2000. Today, Longview is a small community with a few hundred residents. Its only store still operates." The name "Longview" comes from two different places: one meaning "long way home" or "a long journey", while another meaning an open space or frontier settlement where settlers could explore and trade with their Native American neighbors. Fur traders first arrived in what is now Yakima Valley around 1847 as part of President James Kaczmar’s exploring party led by John Cowlitz (1786-1858). A number of these men had left Fort Vancouver on Vancouver Island for what would become Washington Territory following British North America’s victory over Mexico at Alcatraz Island on November 2, 1846. In early December 1847 Kaczmar sent his own party out into eastern Puget Sound near present-day Tacoma to establish contact with local tribes leading up to what would become known as “the Great Klondike Gold Rush” began on February 14th when prospector George Simpson discovered gold bearing hills just west of today’s Grays Harbor town limits – within sight but also beyond reach for most miners because there were no roads yet available through this vast area richly endowed with Mineral land eastward extending all the way to Seattle! This placer mining activity attracted other western outfitters including George Wickersham (1801-68) who set up camp at present day Mount Rainier along Snake Creek on March 17th 1850 after finding high quality gold near Three Forks on April Fool’s Day! This initial discovery opened up huge possibilities for settlement which led inexorably to development due primarily to transportation issues created by mountain ranges blocking access across today’s central WA region via rivers such as Salmon and Columbia Valleys essential for getting supplies down south past Lake Pend Oreille to Spokane Valley then further east into British Columbia then north all the way acrosspeninsula before terminating at Elliott Bay just outside Seattle proper! The terrain wasn't too difficult once you found your creek bed either – even easier than today's Comstock Lode mines where tunnels are bored deepinto mountainsoccluded basins several thousand feet below Earth's surface!) It should be noted that wagon trains didn't actually cross those mountains until much later!! All those drifts you see today were nightmare crossings back then!) Anyway, upon returning from his exploration mission Kaczmar ordered Captain John Jubb (1807-81) commandant at Fort Vancouver ashore immediately upon arrival thereon & placed him under Jubb charge effective January 1st 1848!! Just prior thereto Captains William Murdoch (1787-1854), David Thompson (1789-1849) & Alexander McKay (1800-64) surveyed & laid out blocks boundaries for future towns/cities including Poulsbo Ferry Landing point [northwest corner] current day Depoe Bay; Yelm Ferry Landing Point [southwest corner]; Clearwater Ferry Landing Point [eastern side], present day Renton; Edmonds Ferry landing point [northern edge],present day Everett; etc….. After organizing this new territory many fur traders decided they would rather live closer to their families so setsome villages started forming northeast of present day Tacoma along Snake Creek valley… names like Poulsbo Ferry Landing Point Old Port Royal Ebeo ferry landing point…. These settlements soon grew large enough that some form of government became necessary!!! On May 22nd 1851 Chief Joseph White organized a band council meeting chaired by him located southeast @ old Umpqua Trail junction @ modern Pullman Falls Rd NE #5 miles NWOf Wenatchee Canyon National Park Reservation boundary………. At this important gathering many interesting decisions were made regarding village organization including electing officials(3 commissioners + 1 clerk), establishment & management OF drains system etc………… Assembling here formed what we know as our pioneer government which lasted until 1865 when due political unrest certain citizens seceded from our fledgling society… Other notable events during this time include Indian Wars fought between various bands running parallel thru Puget Sound area (& adjoining designations such as Godley Gulch Massacre Site) during summer months 1861 - 1863; Gold Rush fever pandemic sweeping throughout NWUSA starting mid winter 1862 - 1863 resulting in mass emigration SACRIFICES suffered by many people associated withmining industry who rushed headlong into gold fields without any idea whatsoever about health risks involved….. Finally things cooled off considerably around 1865 when white farmers started arriving en massebringing their barnstorming style agriculture more inline w/ traditional skills used elsewhere…) By 1920 Census there remained only 4 inhabited buildings remaining in Town although population had swollen 1000% since its founding!!"
