Longview is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,925 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bellevue-Marquette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Longview was John Halliday, who arrived in 1847. The town was founded on December 7, 1853 by fifty settlers led by Captain George A. Smith and First Methodist preacher Dr. James Hogg from nearby communities including Everett and Bothell. The name "Longview" was chosen to honor General David Dixon's march from Ohio to Seattle that season to observe the centennial of America's independence (the drive originated in Everett). In 1860 Longview had a population of 350 people; by 1870 it had grown to 1,050 people and reached its peak with 1,500 residents in 1880 before declining precipitously during the mid-19th century as immigration slowed and land values rose. By 1920 LongVIEW had shrunk to 375 people when it merged with neighboring Bellevue into one municipality. The Great Depression hit Longview hard as many businesses closed their doors or went out of business because of low demand for goods manufactured in America due to falling prices abroad. However, through community activism and partnership with other local municipalities, the town bounced back relatively quickly and regained much of its lost business power within a few years. This success story is directly attributable to two things: an innovative marketing campaign launched in 1933 called "Merchandise Mile," which featured free car rides for customers who spent any amount at participating stores; and an active involvement by civic leaders such as Mayor Roy Fenton throughout the 1930s in developing long-term plans for growth that helped revive local businesses while preserving traditional values such as community service." In recent years there has been significant redevelopment taking place both within the town limits itself along I-5/steamboat port area near Grays Harbor County Airport & Midway Mall while also expanding beyond its borders via annexation of adjacent towns including Sumner Heights (2006), Silverdale (2009), Maple Ridge (2011) & even Everett’s existing industrial areas!
