Longview is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. The town was platted in 1854 by Lewis and Clark Expedition members John Wesley Powell and George Vancouver as a trading post on the Upper Columbia River. The first permanent settler was James A. Woolridge, who arrived in 1858. He named his ranch "Woolridge" after himself and founded Longview Agricultural Company to provide land for settlers. In 1865, Woolridge married Jane McMurtry, daughter of Scottish immigrants landowner James McMurtry Jr., which made him an early leader of the community's agricultural expansion. In 1892, local rancher Ben Lindsey bought some land east of Longview from Woolridge for $8 per acre ($140 total). He named it Lindenwood after his home state of New York and developed it into one of the most successful sheep ranches in America during this time period. After years of growth and steady progress with few natural disasters or problems until World War II when Longview experienced its first tornado outbreak (1940), Lindenwood fell victim to flames that destroyed much of their property including their headquarters building which still stands today as a contributing component to downtown Longview's history and skyline viewability today
The United States National Guard was founded on September 11th, 1792 as part of the Continental Army. The Guards were activated in 1903 and have served in every U.S. presidential election since 1912. On November 4th, 2004 President George W. Bush signed into law the Military Family Assistance Act of 2004 which requires all military members to receive a gift from their unit or organization upon retirement or death. The act also authorizes the exchange of national guard gifts between states and the federal government. Gifts can be any type, such as cigarettes, cigars, beer, books, jewelry, etc., but must be returned within 30 days if not received by the recipient. The history of national guard gifts is amazing!
