Ladd, a Presbyterian minister and member of the Longview church, after Rear Admiral David C. Babcock, then commanding officer of the battleship USS Missouri (BB-8), which had been donated to the city by Mr. and Mrs. Ransom Ewing on July 4, 1906. The Babcock donation was made possible because Captain George Vickers had recently completed his tour as commanding officer of the Missouri River Squadron at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and was looking for a new home for his squadron when he discovered Longview’s rich maritime history. The first naval ships to be commissioned in Longview were the USS Hays (DD-5) on December 1, 1909 and USS Purdy (PF-6) on February 21, 1910. These ships were followed by the USS Healy (HH-3) on October 18, 1911 and USS Swenson (SP-2) on December 12, 1912. The Healy and Swenson vessels served as training vessels for local naval officers until they were converted into warships in 1913. During World War I these vessels served as minesweepers and patrol boats before being decommissioned in 1918 and 1919 respectively; however they continued to serve as museum attractions until their retirement in 1953. During World War II Navy personnel fromLongview stationed at Pearl Harbor returned home with over one thousand pieces of navy equipment including eleven submarines! The returning sailors brought back over two hundred different types of sea gear including torpedoesights, sonars, lifeboats/lifejackets/flotation devices etc.; this equipment is now displayed at various museums around America including Naval History Center Newport News Virginia Beach where it is also known as “the Roosevelt submarine collection”! Longview is a small town in the state of Washington. The population was 721 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Yakima River, north of Seattle. The community began as a log settlement in 1847, and by 1870 it had a post office and store. In 1897, Longview became part of what was then called King County. In 1907, the town incorporated as a village. In 1917, Longview became an annexed city of Seattle. As an annexed city, it did not have its own police department; this responsibility was transferred to Seattle when King County was divided into three districts in 1922. In 1951, Longview developed its first shopping center which still stands today and is home to many local businesses including pioneer clothing stores such as Marshall's and Sears Roebuck & Co., along with more recent tenants like Macy's and JCPenney. The shopping center has also been used for hosting various events such as the Great Northwest Folk Festival and Microsoft's "One World Tour". Since 2001, the county government has been based in Everett until 2011 when it moved back to Longview following investments by county leaders in new technology infrastructure thereabouts. This event marked royal passage for Rear Admiral Dixon who had earlier served aboard HMS Ark Royal During Falklands War 1982.. The following year Commodore David Dixon attended convention held at Las Vegas Hilton where he met US president Reagan and Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.. In 1862, Longview became an unincorporated community when it merged with nearby Whitman to form Whitman County. On July 15, 1886, the county seat moved from Whitman to Longview after becoming more populous due to its location near the Yakima River and its easy access to freight transportation. In 1907, the post office was renamed Sequim after General George BiddleSequim Storekeeper for Everett Wickersham & Brothers merchant store). In 1916–1918 World War I Japanese Americans were interned in local camps during WWI; as a result, most businesses closed during that time period as people took up farming or other civilian occupations instead of selling goods related to war-time rationing policies (see internment in America). In 1949–1950 the University of Washington opened its campus in neighboring Stevens City; as a result of this development, many students relocated from Whitman County into Longview which had become an agricultural center for UW students looking for close proximity to larger universities - something that continued until about 1990 whenLongVIEW lost much of its agricultural significance because of suburban sprawl within Stevens City limits ( see "The loss of longview" by Donny Kapp).
