The Coast Guard was established in 1917 as the Washington State Patrol. It became a part of the United States Coast Guard on February 15, 1941. The Coast Guard’s mission is to protect America’s coasts and seas by providing law enforcement and support for coastal communities and sea-based missions. The Coast Guard gift history in Monroe, Washington begins with a donation from Captain John T. Sutherland in 1907. Captain Sutherland donated a motorboat, the "Thorny Island", to the Coast Guard. The first use of the "Thorny Island" was as a training ship for new recruits. It served as the Coast Guard's flagship until 1959 when it was replaced by the (now defunct) . In 1932, Captain Harry Fenton donated an electric start engine to be used on vessels operated by the Coast Guard Auxiliary. This engine allowed auxiliaries such as Search and Rescue teams to operate without having to wait for engines available from commercial vessels. In 1951,Captain Willis Burchdon and Mr. J.C Penney donated two Lifejackets which were given to crews of ships using lifejackets during emergencies or weather conditions that could cause drowning or hypothermia. In 1973,the Coast Guard gifted one of their patrol boats known as "The Boomerang" to the city of Monroe for use as a public information boat during fireworks displays at night time downtown."The Boomerang" remains in service today and is used for educational purposes throughout Monroe annually."
Monroe, Washington is a small town located in the state of Washington. The population was 5,455 at the 2010 census. Monroe is part of the Wenatchee-Tacoma area. The town was first settled in 1859 by John A. Monroe and his family. The town name comes from Monroeville Creek which flows through it. The history of Monroe starts with John A. Monroe who settled there in 1859 and started a farmstead that continued to be run until 1978 when it passed away into private hands. In 1907, the town voted to rename itself Monroe after then president James K. Polk and local citizens donated $5,000 to have this name changed to honor him. In 1958, the city of Wenatchee annexed part of Monroe so that its population would reach 10,000 people within ten years and because of this annexation, the name change back to Monroe again in 1960s when Wenatchee became an official city on its own land separate from Tacoma County which included much of what is now Monroe Township including most of present day Gaston Heights neighborhood). In recent years, growth has been slower than average for many small towns throughout Western Washington due to a combination of factors such as high unemployment rates and low interest rates on mortgages which have made buying homes more difficult for many residents; however, rural/smalltown life remains very important to some residents in Monroe who appreciate having community resources available close at hand like grocery stores (seven), libraries (three), post office (two) as well as civic organizations like fire departments (one) and schools (one).
