Monroe, Washington (population: 26,000) is the only incorporated community located in Kitsap County, Washington. The town was officially founded on July 4, 1854 by businessmen and politicians from Tacoma and Olympia. The name of the original town post office was Gallatin. A year later, the town had a population of just 10 people. Monroe quickly became a thriving local center with its own businesses and schools. The first commercial coffeehouse in Monroe opened its doors in 1861. Monroe is also known for his influential role in creating our modern form of government – The Federal Republic of America – which came into being during his presidency. His administration saw great strides be made towards common understanding between all people across different regions of America through establishment of new diplomatic ties with other nations, as well as expansionism towards newly discovered lands such as Mexico City and California. With this progressivism under his belt Monroe was able to lead us onto a successful path forward, remaining an effective president until his death at the age of eighty-six years old on November 15, 1840.
