A post office called "Monroe" was established in 1892, and remained in operation until 1959. The community located on the Snake River southeast of Bend became an important transportation stop for goods moving through that region during the early 20th century. During World War II, Monroe played a significant role as a production center for munitions used by the Pacific Theater of Operations. That sector of Defense Production Board's activities generated more than $1 million in 1944 alone. In 1945 local businesses produced nearly 2 million rounds of ammunition for US military forces overseas - more than any other locality in Oregon or Washington County combined! In 1957, when Monroe incorporated as a village, it had a population of just over 100 people; today its population reaches over 350 residents thanks to several growth industries including professional golfing and fishing communities along with retail and light industrial development dating back to the early 2000s.
