Moses Lake is located east of Seattle on State Route 9 and north of Moses Lake Dam. The community was founded in 1902 by early settler Augustus C. McCormick and his wife Sarah A. McCormick as a small farmstead on the shores of Moses Lake. The McCormicks named their community after Mount Sinai, where the biblical Joseph fled with his family to escape Pharaoh's behest to return to Egypt (Exodus 19:4-7). In 1906, the McCormicks donated land for a school and church in what would become Moses Lake. The two structures were completed in 1907 and 1909 respectively. In 1929, local citizens voted to form a city government within the boundaries of the new town of Moses Lake; this vote led to the name change from "Moses" to "MosesLake". On July 17, 1931, voters passed an ordinance creating a fire department; this event marked the first time that such an organization had been established in Moses Lakesville blockading district. On January 27th 1976 residents of Moses Lakesvilleblockading district responded to an attempted milk seizure by police officers with gunfire when they refused orders not to disperse during a peaceful protest against milk prices set by deregulation efforts occurring inside state government properties at that time which had caused production costs for consumers skyrocketing across America (WTOP article). As a result of this shootout between law enforcement and civilians residents adjacent blocksaded area were evacuated while damages occurred amounting up spillage onto surrounding fields totaling $10KUSD worth of equipment destroyed or damaged making it one of Washington's largest dairy incidents ever(WTOP article). This event served as motivation for then-Governor Gary Locke to call for statehood for Pierce County . By 1978 agreement had been made between both governments for county legislation granting county status effective November 1st 1978 setting forth processes/policies governing county operations including sheriff/judicial branch elections without prior approval from both entities thereby solidifying county existence within state governmental structure(PierceCounty website). With ratification by both governments PierceCounty was incorporated effective date(November 1st 1978) with current name (MosesLake County)
