Moses Lake, Washington is home to the National Guard and its history goes back over two centuries. The first national guard unit in Moses Lake was organized on November 16, 1861 as Company A of the 9th Infantry Regiment. In 1916, the 8th Infantry Regiment became part of the National Guard and Company C was formed from these units. On January 1, 1917, Companies B-1 and B-2 were added to the regiment and it became known as Company NG. In 1949, an act was passed giving the National Guard jurisdiction over all military areas within Moses Lake city limits. This gave rise to the idea that companies should be stationed in central or downtown Moses Lake so that people could come see them whenever they wanted. The company began practicing law enforcement duties in 1957 and since then has served as a Law Enforcement Battalion for both local government and private businesses. The current company commander is Lt Col Michael Purdy with Headquarters located at 210 E Main Street in downtown Moses Lake. There are also numerous subordinate commands throughout Benson County including: Barracks (LtCols barracks), Waterford (Airmen barracks), Eastman (Aviation detachment), North Fork Valley Militia Units 3rd Battalion (5th Armored Cavalry) & 2nd Battalion (7th Infantry) - all located within Benson County Sheriff’s Department boundaries; Northwest Support Squadron which provides helicopter transport services for mission critical tasks; Specialty Units which provide specialized training or support to other units; Troop A Officer Candidate School here at US Army Garrison Moses lake Curlew Army Ammunition Plant; Mounted Patrol Unit which helps protect state assets such as forests, lakes and dams; Emergency Response Command Center providing command and control for emergency response activities statewide Today's National Guard unit consists of more than 2500 soldiers who serve every day across six states including Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Nevada and Arizona The modern-day United States Military presence in Moses Lake dates back to 1855 when troops arrived from California under Captain John McLaughlin with orders to garrison Fort Hall until further notice due to threats posed by Mexican traders operating through what is now Skagit County During this time there were no permanent buildings apart from a few tents used by Ulysses S Grant during his visit in 1857 while he toured the area together with General Lew Wallace On July 14 however a fortuitous event occurred when a ammunition wagon drove into a ditch near where present day Highway 12 crosses SR 5 just east of town square on McLeod Road causing an explosion resulting in serious injuries to five individuals one fatally This event started what would become known as “the Great Seattle Fire” which destroyed most of navy Yard but also caused extensive damage to surrounding property amounting $4 million dollars today . It remains one of Seattle’s most infamous tragedies . The following year Captain John McLaughlin volunteered his services once again under General William Tecumseh Sherman disembarking from USS Monitor at Puget Sound docksyards . He arrived too late due to illness but his replacement Commodore Basil Davidson did not hesitate getting underway immediately upon learning about Sherman’s orders . After spending several months camped out onshore near Olympia he set off April 15 1858 following instructions received via runners from General Woolridge himself commanding all forces assembled along Puget Sound frontier ready for war against Mexico if necessary .. When news reached him that Mexican forces had crossed into British Columbia he ordered his men southward without waiting for lumber trains bringing reinforcements etc before marching directly into battle against superior Mexican force at Palo Alto Bridge Massacre effective April 30 1860 killing 19 Mexicans plus four interpreter guards ...........
