Oak Harbor is a small town located in Pierce County, Washington, United States. The population was 2,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tacoma–Bellevue–Everett metropolitan area and is the county seat of Pierce County. The first Europeans to visit what is now Oak Harbor were Spanish explorers who passed through on their way from Monterey to San Francisco in 1692. They named the place La Isla de la Conchita (The Island of the Conchita). The first permanent settler in present-day Oak Harbor was John Cook who arrived there in 1853. He built a cabin on what is now Park Avenue. Cook's wife, Mary Ann Bruce, also established a homestead there in 1854. In 1861, Alexander Graham Bell founded his own telephone company here and called it Bell Telephone Company after his birthplace in Scotland. The first store building was erected here in 1865 by John Fenton known as Fenton's Store & Hotel which later became known as the Post Office Building. In 1872, a group of businessmen led by Colonel George Withers chartered the Oak Harbor Water Supply Company to provide water to residents and businesses near Lake Superior north of downtown Tacoma. This company remains active today providing drinking water for over 1 million people across Pierce County and parts of King and Snohomish counties throughout WA USA In 1915, local fruit farmer A C Hargrave opened what is now City Market grocery store on North Main Street which served as the nucleus for many modern commercial enterprises including Northwest Airlines' Boeing Field headquarters until 1981 when that facility relocated to SeaTac Airport . Today Hargrave's offers an extensive selection of groceries and baked goods from numerous suppliers all under one roof with more than 12 locations statewide . On October 6th 1915 Piers Anthony composed "A Harbour Passage" song about life at 'the little town'. That tune has been popular ever since with locals playing it frequently at various events both large scale such as Oktoberfestivals or family gatherings
