Oak Harbor is a small town in King County, Washington, located on the Kitsap Peninsula. The population was 1,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Olympia–Tacoma Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Oak Harbor were Dutch-Americans who arrived in 1792 and erected a log cabin on what is now Main Street. In 1821, the United States Department of Agriculture set up an experimental farm there called "Old Stone House" which served as a model for later cultivation of food crops and livestock production near Puget Sound. In 1824, John Wesley Powell visited Oak Harbor and recommended its location for settlement by Americans because of its natural resources including coal and iron ore; it had also been subject to raids by Native Americans. The town was platted in 1827 by Captain James Cook with land donated from Chief Seattle. By 1830, nearly all of Oak Harbor's residents had come to live there due to its advantages such as good transportation links with Tacoma and Olympia, cheap labor available through maritime trade, access to fishing grounds offshore, plenty of water supplies (due to the harbor), and ample grazing land for livestock.
