Oak Harbor is a town in Clark County, Washington, United States. The population was 10,411 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. Oak Harbor was founded on November 12, 1881 by John Ladd and his family as a stagecoach stop on the Oregon Trail. The first post office in Oak Harbor was established in 1884. The town grew rapidly during the early years of its existence because of its location on Puget Sound and access to freight and passenger trains. In 1916, Oak Harbor became an incorporated town when it amalgamated with neighboring Sea-Tac to form the Seattle–Tacoma Metropolitan Area. The town has experienced several major economic changes over the years including: 1) A period of rapid growth from World War II through the late 1960s when many new jobs were created in shipbuilding, aircraft manufacturing and other industrial sectors; 2) A period of decline during the 1970s due to job losses within various industries; 3) An increased focus on outdoor recreation in recent decades which has led to an increase in housing prices withintown limits; 4) Recent economic stability thanks to growing tourism and other businesses primary emphasis being upon education and research;
Oak Harbor was founded by James Cook in 1792 as a trading post on the Strait of Juan de Fuca. It became a port for logging and shipping around the Puget Sound region, and in 1851 it was named after John D. Rockefeller, who had settled there in 1847. The town grew steadily during the late 19th century, thanks to its access to shipping and logging supplies, as well as its location near ferries that connected the Puget Sound region with Asia and points east. In 1907, Oak Harbor firmed up its ties with Seattle when it became an incorporated city. By 1925, it had become one of the most rapidly growing communities in Washington state, due to its position as a major freight stop on Interstate 5 and its heavy reliance on agriculture for revenue.
