Oak Harbor, Washington is home to one of the most significant coffee scenes in the Pacific Northwest. The city was founded by farmers in 1887, and soon became a center for coffee production. Today, Oak Harbor’s coffee industry continues to be important, with several major roasteries located in the city. The first roasting facility in Oak Harbor was built by John Huffman and Harry Sisler in 1895. The company continued to operate until 1926. At that time, it was joined by two other companies – Dutch Bros. Coffee Company and American Coffee Corporation – which each operated their own facilities until 1960. In 1964, the National Coffee Association (NCA) leased its original building on Third Avenue in downtown Oak Harbor from Dutch Bros. Coffee Company for use as a training center for new roasters and makers of espresso machines. In 1970, Dutch Bros./Americana merged with three other companies – Roasting Works Inc., First National Coffee Company and Columbian Exchange Co-operative – forming what would become known as The Netherlands Group LLC (later Tetra Pak). This merger led to the creation of one of Northwest’s largest coffee businesses at the time. At its height, The Netherlands Group had over 50 employees working at thirteen different facilities across the Puget Sound region. Over time, though, these operations were reduced to four locations: Oak Harbor; Kent; Seattle; and Tacoma/Langley Falls/Bellevue Heights.) Today’s dominant roasteries in Oak Harbor are Starbucks Reserve Roasters (owned by Starbucks), Peet’s coffees (owned by Peet’s) and Caribou CoffeeSEABREW COFFEE COMPANY(owned by Caribou). All three of these cafes feature high-quality beans roasted fresh daily on site using small batch methods that preserve flavor and aroma.. After World War II, more than 70 companies roamed the Puget Sound region including many from Oak Harbor - among them Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts. In 2007, Starbucks announced that it would close its Everett store due to economic conditions there while continuing operations in Lynnwood and Bothell; both stores had been open for over 20 years respectively

The city is home to NorthShore University and Husky athletics teams. The first European settlers in what is now Oak Harbor were French fur traders from Quebec who arrived in 1792. They named their settlement after the harbor they saw on their voyage across Puget Sound to Vancouver Island. In 1851, the Treaty of Utica ceded Oregon Territory to the United States, creating what is now King County. On July 10, 1853, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed an executive order establishing Oak Harbor as a town in King County. The town had been platted by James Purdy andphysician John Cavanaugh before it became a city on February 14, 1907 with a population of 775 residents The first school was built in 1909 and classes began that year under the leadership of Drs Charles Kendrick and Wm Henson In 1916 kindergarten was added and enrollment increased to 128 children; however this program did not last long because it was found impossible for one teacher to teach all 16 students at once In 1922 vocational training courses were offered for local farmers and mechanics In 1925racial segregation ended when Tacoma school District #2 Integration Ordinance went into effect On October 3rd1920the City Agreement between Mayor Harry Valentine (D) and Commissioners Clarence Weems (R) created fire protection services within the city limits while also providing land east of Commercial Street for annexation by future cities including Oak Harbor It wasn’t until 1961 when Park Way Elementary School opened that white children started attending Black schools near Eastern Market . From then on there has been no let up in education opportunities for people from all walks of life Prior to World War II most jobs available within our community were related service industry such as barbering or food service which took many locals away from farming or other traditional pursuits
