Oak Harbor is a town located in Kitsap County, Washington, United States. The population was 9,872 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Kitsap Peninsula and includes the villages of Oak Harbor Village and Southsound. In 1871, President Ulysses S. Grant decided to move the United States government from Philadelphia to Tacoma because of its central location and excellent transportation links. The townsite was donated by Captain John Denny in 1874 to givepackers and settlers hope for success as they traveled through what were then part of British Columbia. The first store in Oak Harbor was built by Larkin & Co., a dry goods store that operated from 1876-1880 on Second Street near present day Third Avenue. This store served as the nucleus around which other businesses grew until 1906 when an electric street light became necessary for travelers along Birch Road who had to cross Puget Sound at Mill Creek Bridge before reaching their destination. In 1916, lumber magnate James Jagger organized what would become Kitsap Electric Cooperative which purchased Langford & Sons’ electric lights on Second Street (then known as Main Street). With this purchase came new opportunities for business development with several mills opening up including Jagger's Paper Company (now Verizon) in 1924; Jagger's Fisheries (now Safeway) in 1927; Hoechst Celanese Corporation's America Canning Workshops (now Johnson Controls) in 1928; Allied Signal's Radio Shack location opened in 1931; and Western Electric Corporation's Sanitarium plant commenced production at 5200 Commerce Way NW in 1932 providing much needed jobs during World War II while also helping develop Oak Harbor into one of Washington State's leading communities.[1] In 2006, Oak Harbor celebrated its centennial year with events such as a pancake breakfast at our Community Gathering House, picnic lunch at Pioneer Square Park, Founders Day parade down First Avenue followed by dinner at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church featuring local produce from our garden club[2]. There were also programs sponsored by various organizations such as Women’s Philanthropy Society/Washington Federation of Labor,[3], Chamber of Commerce/OAKHARBOR BUSINESS ASSOCIATION,[4], Arts Council/Washington Folklife Commission,[5], Kiwanis Club[6], American Legion Post #471[7], Rotary International [8], Playground Association PACKANZA! play area open to all K–12 students beginning May 6th thru September 5th each year [9],[10],[11],[12],[13],[14] and more! Many community members participated including many children who enjoyed playing on our brand new playground equipment grant funded by Friends of Parkside Park! We are excited about celebrating 100 years this year and look forward to continued growth and progress within our community!
