The town's first post office opened in 1850 and remained open until 1907 when it was discontinued due to lack of mail service from Tacoma. The city of Tacoma developed near Oak Harbor and began offering streetcar service between the two towns in 1909. In 1912, Oak Harbor became a borough within Tacoma and continued to offer services through its own municipality until 1975 when it merged with Tacoma proper to form one municipality again under the name of "Oak Harbor." In late 2007, the City Council voted 4-1 to change the name back to its original spelling of "Oakville." This decision came after years of discussion among residents about whether or not they wanted their community renamed after one of its earliest settlers - Captain Samuel Chapman - or after someone more centralized within the city such as Admiral David Dixon Porter or Forster Morton Thomson (the founder of Boeing). Ultimately, voters opted for Thompson's suggestion and now use both spellings interchangeably throughout most contexts outside OfHavre University where he taught from 1951-1963 before becoming an administrator there. In 1840, Captain Samuel Chapman set out from his farmstead on Hog Island northwest of present day Yakima into what would become what is known as Kitsap County. He named his new settlement 'Oak Harbour' because he thought that this spot might provide good grazing for sheep during winter months along Puget Sound's eastern shoreline. Over time however little changed about these early pioneers other than their choice for a location; all else rapidly grew around them including: agriculture; industry; transportation; religion; education; commerce...and then residential development which ensued primarily because inadequate funding could not keep pace with rapid growth rates everywhere else in town! In 1889, the Kittitas Coal and Coke Company was founded by John Davenport and James Armstrong with a goal of shipping coal from what is now Snohomish County to Tacoma for export. The company had a small plant on First Avenue North until it was destroyed by fire in 1896. In 1909, Oak Harbor became an incorporated municipality with one vote per capita over its four-member board of Commissioners. In 1916 the Kittitas Electric Railway built a line from downtown to Eagle Lake which became operational in 1921. The town's first store opened on Main Street in 1903 and closed in 1912 due to economic hardship caused by World War I(). A second store opened on Second Avenue South after three years of construction that cost $5000 (). The building still stands today as the first home salecade open to the public located within blocks of each other in Northwest America (). "In just over eighty years," according to historian Drs.
