Oak Harbor is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 3,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma Metropolitan Area. The first permanent settler in what became Oak Harbor was a man named George Forbes who arrived in 1851. In 1854, a group of businessmen and farmers founded the town on the site of present-day downtown Oak Harbor. The first post office was established in 1855, and by 1870 there were twenty-one businesses and five residences in what is now downtown Oak Harbor. In 1906, Dr. Prentice published "A History of Seattle" which included an article about Oak Harbor entitled " pioneer pearls from this locality ". This brought business to the town which led to its growth during World War I when many soldiers came for service here; industry also flourished with shipbuilding and manufacturing taking off after that war. After the war ended, production slowed but then picked up again due to increased demand for lumber from construction projects such as Interstate 5 and Puget Sound Bridge Replacement. Oak Harbor is a town in Kittitas County, Washington, United States. The population was 2,591 at the 2010 census. The name of the community is most likely derived from an early settler's observation that "the bay where it stands is so named because of the Oaks that grow there" The first permanent European settlers in what is now Kittitas County were David Thompson and his brother John Barrow who arrived in 1792 from New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. They founded a trading post on the Puget Sound near present-day Olympia. The following year, David married Mary Hillier and built a log cabin nearby which served as their home until 1809 when they moved to Olympia. There they operated a store and mined salt from the nearby hills before moving again to Oak Harbor in 1828 to found their own post office. In 1835 they erected a sawmill on Salmon Creek which became one of the largest mills in Northwest America at that time. Oak Harbor was incorporated as a town by an act of the legislature on February 24, 1889; it was named for David Aiken Howell (1821-1893), its first mayor. Howell had been president of Kitsap County Board of Supervisors during its formative years and had played an important role in developing Kittitas County into what it is today. He also served as chairman of the county board from 1911 until his death in 1893. Townspeople voted 9-1 to create a library within town limits after seeing how successful Tacoma's library had been becoming; this building opened in 1902 with shelves full of books donated by Tacoma residents During World War II, Oak Harbor joined forces with other towns along Puget Sound to become regional headquarters for patriotic activities under military direction known as "Puget Sound Headquarters." This included production values such as costumes for soldiers and propaganda films filmed at various locations around Puget Sound including Oak Harbor After the war ended, many jobs disappeared due to decimation of local manufacturing industries by reactivation of wartime plants throughout Western Washington associated with Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Wacoal and other major companies whose businesses returned relatively quickly after 1945 . One result was high school graduation rates dipping below 90% between 1951 and 1957 while average household incomes increased only marginally .
