Oak Harbor is a small town in Kitsap County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. The first European settlers in what is now Oak Harbor were Norwegian fishermen who founded a trading post on the bay in 1851. In 1882, US senator David Cranch decided to move his home and office from Tacoma to Oak Harbor because its location on Puget Sound made it an ideal site for a navy installation. The new naval station was named Naval Station Kitsap (later Naval Station Everett) after Cranch's hometown of Killenkirk, Scotland. In 1917, when World War I ended, Naval Station Everett became USS "Seattle" and shelled Japanese forces during the Battle of Midway which resulted in Japan surrendering without any blood being shed on American soil. This incident has been called "the greatest naval victory of WWI". The town grew rapidly following World War II as Boeing plant workers came to Oak Harbor to build their company's new planes and missiles from early 1942 until 1957 when they moved away again to South Carolina due to wartime production restrictions. After that time there was less growth until about 2000 when businesses started moving back into town and redevelopment began taking hold with mixed-use buildings built near the waterfront and along Route 1A which runs through town center

Oak Harbor is a small town in Kitsap County, Washington, United States. The population was 2,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. Sea-Tac Airport is located in the town. The first European to visit Oak Harbor was Captain Christopher Wessels of the Dutch vessel "Vrieslandt" on October 26, 1792. He named it Kechuaak (now known as Chehalis) after his ship and journeyed upriver for seven days before returning to Dutch soil on November 1st. On January 10th 1803 James Cook anchored off the coast of present day Oak Harbor while exploring Puget Sound from Japan eastward to North America. He had landed at what is now Seattle on February 13th and named it Nimi Point after his captain's Indian interpreter and aide-de-camp, Nimishkinwala Strait or Pasquale della Gazzara Strait near Olympia Bay where he anchored his flagship HMS Discovery with two other vessels - Santee and USS Constitution under the command of Commodore Matthew Cushing captained by First Lieutenant David Thompson. Captain George Vancouver sailed from potential landfall about 175 miles northwest of Oak Harbor on September 7, 1804 with four ships--HMS Discovery ( Flagship ), HMS Erebus (flagship), HMS Terror (flagship), Arrowhead (vessel) --to explore Puget Sound which he had recently discovered during his surveys as part of Admiral James Cook's circumnavigation of North America in 1800-1801 Aided by landings at Juan de Fuca Island on December 11th 1805 and Whidbey Island on January 14th 1806 he reached Hood Canal entrance about 280 miles southeast of today's Oak Harbor when passage became available for only those traveling downwind from Blaine Anchorage southward over Admiralty Inlet then along Northeast Passage until they met a gale southwestward that forced them back within Admiralty Inlet April 12 1830 leaving Discovery behind which has been described as one of history's most futile voyages ever attempted On July 5th 1836 USS Constitution under Commander John Rodgers made an unprovoked attack upon outstanding Spanish pirate vessel "El Pardo" off shore rocks just offshore from present day Kechuaak Lighthouse some 43 nautical miles northwest of modern day Oak Harbor killing five Spaniards including its captain Antonio Lopez who had been picked up ashore three weeks earlier by another American ship New England whaling brig Bounty after successful robbing British shipping convoy off Georgia coast During this engagement Vice Admiral Sir George Simpson commanded all naval forces involved sinking El Pardo with fourteen guns and capturing her topman Miguel Gomez who later died in captivity Also prize crew were: Master Mate William Bainbridge Captains mate Ambrose Moody Second Mate Robert Landry Seaman Joben Coffin Quartermaster Samuel Kendall Carpenter Storesman Joseph Hickey Signalman Timothy Carney Ensign Nicholas Trimble drummer Israel Ramirez Roeper & Associates Surveyors paid $1,500 each for insurance against such actionsUSS Constitution remained moored at Kechuaak Lighthouse until sold Dec 1862 to US Navy Yard Oakland CA where she served as barracks ship until scrapped in 1936 With advances in transportation we are now able to enjoy all that our beautiful town has to offer both inside and out including our rich history dating back more than one hundred years!
