In 1851, entrepreneur James Noyes bought a piece of land in what is now Oak Harbor from thePoint Defiance Band of Chippewa Indians for $1,000. To start building his mill there, Noyes had to clear away forest that covered most of the site. He got help from Oregon Congressman John Sherman to get government permission to build the mill and founded what is now WIDCOMS Corporation in 1865 as one of the first organized companies in America with business goals beyond mere profitmaking. Oak Harbor soon became known as "The Promised Land" because it was supposed to be the location for a new American seaport on Puget Sound called Tacoma. However, due to lack of funding and competition from Tacoma's city fathers, Oak Harbor never received much attention from developers until after World War II when Interstate 90 was built through Puget Sound and connect Seattle with Tacoma making Oak Harbor an important port town again. Today, Oak Harbor remains a sleepy fishing village only accessible by boat or car because its narrow main street does not allow much vehicular traffic other than bicycles or pedestrians.
