Oak Harbor is a town in Pierce County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of the four towns in Pierce County by population. The first people to live in what is now Oak Harbor were the Puyallup tribe. In 1855, James Gillett built a log cabin on the corner of First and Harrison Streets. The first post office in this town was established on December 12, 1855. On October 17, 1861, Oak Harbor incorporated as a village under the name of Crescent City. On July 7, 1907, Crescent City became an incorporated town with a population of 438 residents when it annexed part of Oak Harbor from its original village. Oak Harbor's economy has been based mostly on agriculture since its earliest days; however, there have been some recent changes to its economy including service sector employment and retail development along Harrison Street south of I-5 where many small businesses are located today because there is little competition for space within such an entrepreneurial culture. As one of Pierce County's smaller towns with only 598 residents at the 2010 census (the smallest among all five towns), Oak Harbor has limited opportunity for economic development outside of services and retail jobs that are available through its own community government or through annexations by other villages/towns within Pierce County
