Nearby Costco also made waves when it announced plans to open a store within 2 miles (3 km) of downtown Pasco
On July 12, 1813, Pasco was founded when Captain George Vancouver, who had been dispatched by the Spanish to explore and chart the Strait of Juan de Fuca, discovered land on what is now the Kitsap Peninsula. The area that became Pasco was part of the Port Townsend district of Seattle. In 1854, Pasco joined Seattle as a city. On November 15 of that year, it was made a county seat with its own government. The first courthouse in Pasco sat on Third Avenue South near First Street. It burned down in 1902 but was replaced by another building which still stands today. Pasco has experienced many changes throughout its history including becoming an agricultural center during World War II; becoming an industrial town during the late 20th century; and experiencing rapid growth in recent decades due to its proximity to Puget Sound and other metropolitan areas
