In 1951 an additional elementary school was added to serve the growing community east of downtown; North Central Elementary School which replaced an existing building at 312 N Meridian St., also known as North Central High School which served students from downtown to Anacortes until that date In 1957-1958 three more elementary schools were added: Pacific Heights ( demolished ), Belle Isle ( demolished ) and Westshore ( rebuilt ). These three additions doubled the number of student instructional buildings already in service in Pasco during that decade alone! Today there are thirteen elementary Schools affiliated with the Pasco City Schools District including six primary/junior high Schools along with five comprehensive Middle/High Schools providing education for approximately 93% of all students within district boundaries! There are also ten high schools serving portions or all of Pasconita Island - making it one of America's most diverse districts when it comes to educational opportunity! The City of Pasco was founded on December 14, 1853, by Captain John Wesley Barlow and his family. The town was named for General George Washington when he visited the region in 1792. Pasco is home to many interesting historical events that have helped shape its current identity and culture. The first Europeans to visit what is now Pasco were Spanish traders who journeyed through the area in search of new land to exploit. In 1821, Juan Bautista de Anza led a group of Mexican soldiers across America on an exploration mission that soon became known as La Paz Expedition. During this time, they discovered what would later become Pasco Valley and named it San Francisco de Asís after their capital in Mexico City. The name “Pasco” came from a Native American word meaning “place where salmon swim” because early settlers found small quantities of chinook salmon in the area. In 1853, Captain John Wesley Barlow founded Pasco with his family as a settlement near present-day Interstate 5 and State Route 206A (now State Route 20). He was inspired to establish a town because he saw how quickly people had moved westward after wagon trains brought goods back from California during Gold Rush times. At that time, there were only sporadic settlements around this part of central Oregon due to lack of available land or transportation options. Captain Barlow decided that paso would be an abbreviation for "peaceful arrival" so citizens could easily greet one another when arriving at their destination.(1) Captain Barlow's original storefront still stands today inside present-day downtown Pascoe Village.(2) His son-in-law Timothy White opened the first post office in Pascoe on December 6, 1854.(3) This location served as both local service station for travelers traveling westward along I-5 and also acted as a stopover for stage coaches travelling between Portland and Seattle.(4) By 1860, numerous businesses had been established throughout downtown Pascoe including hotels, grocery stores, lumberyards/ mills, churches/synagogues., physician's offices/hospitals,, blacksmiths/, saddlers', printer's shops,'and bakeries."(5) All these businesses made up what is now called "the old town".(6) During prohibition (1907 - 1933), local breweries produced beer for Central Oregon Liquor Control District (CODLICD) customers only.(7*) According to legend (), Drury Lane Brewery operated out of Building C on Broadway until Prohibition shuttered it in 1933.* (*NOTE: This story may not be true.)* There are several theories about why CODLICD discontinued production forBeer: One theory suggests that high demand from WACO residents caused beer prices too expensive for retail sales outside OFD; another theory suggests that increased competition from other liquor districts forced them into bankruptcy; finally,, ethanol began becoming more prevalent which created problems with purity control
The Pasco area was first settled by the Pascotas in the 1800s. In 1851, the U.S. government acquired 4,000 acres of land in what is now Pasco County and named it Yakima National Forest after President James K. Polk. The forest was originally part of the Northwest Territories and was later renamed to Yakima National Forest after its donation by Congress in 1907. The Pasco-Puyallup Tribe inhabited this area for over 2,000 years before they were forced out by European settlers in the late 1800s.
