Pasco, Washington is a small town in King County, Washington. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metropolitan area. Pasco's economy depends on agriculture and fishing. The first people to live in what is now Pasco were the Duwamish and Klahoe Nations. They hunted salmon and other game near present day Puget Sound. In 1851, when Congress passed the Indian Appropriations Act, it provided for land grants to Native Americans in Washington Territory. Among these was a grant of 640 acres (248 hectares) to Jens Christensen, one of the leaders of the Claimant Indians who had applied for land on which he could build his home. Christensen built his house on this grant in 1852-53. In 1861, when Pasco was organized as a town, it had a population of only 7 people; by 1870 it had grown to over 100 people due to various waves of immigration from Europe including Germans (1910), Italians (1920), Poles (1930), Japanese (1945), Scandinavian refugees (1945-46), and others following World War II. Most growth occurred during World War II because so many jobs were available with heavy industry being destroyed in Japan and Europe during that time; however, much job growth also occurred after 1945 as new technologies started becoming available such as electrical engineering and computer programming which brought about new opportunities for employment throughout the community including within private companies as well as government agencies like NASA and Veterans Affairs Administration . Pasco is also the location of Mount Rainier National Park. The first European to visit Pasco was Captain George Vancouver in 1792 while exploring Northwest America. He named it " Puget Sound" after his home country, Scotland. On July 14, 1853, General James K. Polk ordered the burning of Pasco by troops under the command of Major General Winfield Scott during the Mexican-American War as punishment for its support of Mexico. The town had been unscathed by fire however and continued to prosper despite the attack. Afterward, two rivers ran through downtown--the Kitsap River to the south and Lake Union to the north--making it difficult for development until transportation became available and people began moving into new neighborhoods in suburban areas outside of town limits beginning in the late 1950s and early 1960s when Interstate 95 made provision for bypassing downtown traffic jams during rush hours. In that time period too much infrastructure investment has occurred within Pasco's borders rather than beyond them which has led to increased congestion and air pollution along with low wages for residents relative to other large cities in Western Washington state
