The Pasco area has been inhabited by people for over 12,000 years and is known for its dramatic coastal cliffs and surfing beaches. The first Europeans to see the present-day Pasco area were Spanish traders in 1542 when they sailed up the Columbia River from Mexico City. Juan Rodriguez de la Vega named it San Francisco on November 3, 1542 after his ship "San Salvador" sighted land off the coast of California. In 1853, a group of settlers led by Captain George Evans founded what would become Pasco Beach on Puget Sound near what is now downtown Pasco. In 1860, gold was discovered in nearby Blaine and became an impetus for development around this site; however, due to Fort Snelling's blockade of Seattle during that time period (1859-1860), no new settlements were established in this part of Washington County until 1865 when two men by the name of Halsey and Wagoner located Camp Nisqually on Elliott Bay beach while exploring claims made onshore about where Seattle should be located given that gold had been found there as well as other locations including Gold Rush towns like Auburn and Tukwila which never developed because of lack of water or land availability. In 1867 Halsey donated 5 acres (20 m²) along Elliott Bay beach to establish what would become today’s Pasco Mall which opened its doors on November 2nd, 1967

Pasco was initially named after Captain John Pasco, who was an American flagcaptain during the Spanish-American War. The community grew quickly and by 1920, it had become a thriving little town with a population of around 100 people. The early years of Pasco were filled with economic struggles. However, through hard work and determination, the community rose to become one of the most successful small towns in America. In 1954, Pasco became part of the newly formed Snohomish County and experienced rapid growth. The town continued to prosper until 1990 when it was struck by a devastating fire that destroyed much of its infrastructure. Despite these setbacks, Pasco has managed to keep its tradition of entrepreneurship alive and remain an important center for commerce and culture in Washington State. It is the largest city in Oregon and the second largest city in the Northwest United States after Seattle. Pasco was founded byPNasco Indian Tribe members on November 12, 1855 as a trading post on the banks of the Willamette River. The post became an important transportation hub for goods arriving from California and other parts of the Northwest. In 1861, Pasco became one of three cities in Portland when that city was created from Multnomah County and Oregon Territory. The first mayor of Pasco was John Wickersham who served from 1861 to 1865. Wickersham developed what is now downtown Pasco into a thriving commercial center with several businesses such as The Gilded Cage Theater and Booking House which were built before World War I when trade between America and Europe increased significantly due to war-time production needs. After World War I ended, many new businesses opened up including A&W Root Beer Company (now part of PepsiCo) which began manufacturing ice cream in 1922; Western Electric Corporation (now Comcast) which established its headquarters here in 1925; Pacific Telephone & Telegraph Company (PT&T), later renamed Bell Atlantic Telephone Corporation (Batelle); SEIU Local 521 – now Service Employees International Union – which began service here as a telephone company in 1934; KOHA Radio Corporation – now KIRO Radio Broadcasting Corporation – which leased land near present day First Baptist Church for broadcasting purposes starting in 1941; Sears Roebuck & Co., still headquartered here today, first opening its doors here in 1916. In 1954, Nike Incorporated opened their world's first sports apparel store at 401 NNW Fourth Avenue just north of Interstate 5 Bridge Street across from what is now First Baptist Church.; also located nearby at this time were JBLtronics Ltd., Kressner Tire Warehouse and American Motors Corp.. These early anchor stores would eventually become known collectively as "Nike South". Today's Anchor Store includes Foot Locker Department Stores Macy's Incorporated - once home to Sears - Neiman Marcus Incorporated - home to Macy's wings - Kohl's Department Stores - once Home Depot - plus Nordstrom Rack
