Military deployments have a long and diverse history in Pasco, Washington. The city was home to the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard from 1861 to 1898, and has seen many battles and campaigns during the American Civil War, World War II, and other conflicts. Today, Pasco is home to the U.S. Marine Corps Base Lewis-McChord which houses over 10,000 Marines and sailors who are deployed around the world. The first military deployment in Pasco occurred on October 3rd of 1861 when USS Olympia sailed into Puget Sound for repairs following an engine failure off of Vancouver Island. Over the years, Pasco has hosted a variety of military events including amphibious assaults on Lopez Island (1948), air combat over Seattle (1949), Desert Storm (1991), Operation Neptune’s Spear (1998), and Operation Restore Hope (2005). Today, there are more than 2 dozen active duty Marine battalions stationed in Pasco County alone with additional units stationed at Naval Station Kitsap Shores and Lewis-McChord. In addition to its role as a hub for allied forces conducting operations throughout Northwest Washington, Pasco also serves as a training ground for future Marines. As part of their ongoing effort to keep our community safe both domestically and abroad, the City of Pasco sponsors annual Armed Forces Day ceremonies that celebrate local service members who have given their all while serving our country. These ceremonies are open to all residents regardless of age or political affiliation. This year’s event will take place on Saturday April 6th 2019 from 9am-1pm at Tacoma Community College across from Lake Union Parkade

Pasco is bordered by SeaTac on the east and west coasts and Kenton on the north. The town was founded in 1851 as a stop on the Oregon Trail. The first post office opened in 1853. In 1916, Pasco became part of King County and was named after Admiral George Vancouver's first visit to Puget Sound. In 1976, Pasco annexed what were then parts of Bothell and Redmond townships to its boundaries. In 2000, it annexes Issaquah which had been an unincorporated community since before that time. In 1999-2000, Pasco began working with local private developers to develop a mixed-use project known as "Pasco Harbor". This $100 million complex would include offices, housing units and a parkland centerpiece called Harbourfront Park/. The project has faced several setbacks but is still in development; final permits were obtained for construction in late 2009 but are subject to revision due to environmental concerns about potential shoreline damage from future oil spills and other activities associated with the harbor redevelopment project
