The United States Navy deployed gifts to Pasco, Washington during World War II. Gifts from the navy have been a part of the community since the early days of the city. This event is significant because it marked the first time that money had been sent directly from Seattle residents to Tacoma as part of an effort to improve relations between Tacoma and Pasco. In 1946, when Congress enacted legislation providing funds for military defense in addition to domestic programs, Admiral Hyatt presented a check for $10,000 towards military equipment purchases at Tacoma’s shipyards. This donation helpedurbuildingofTacoma Naval Shipyard after years of neglect by local leaders. In 1951-1952 Captain Frank Hecht donated supplies needed for Operation Neptune’s Spear-the largest amphibious assault on Japanese soil during World War II-to be conducted at nearby Camp Hansen on Bainbridge Island Naval Station. As a result of this donationtherewasanewbuildinginPascowhich served as headquartersforthe Amphibious Forces Pacific Fleet until its closure in 1998. The name Pasco comes from the Spanish word "pasa," meaning "to pass." The first settlers in what is now Pasco arrived in 1853. They were led by Captain George Vancouver and his party of fur trappers. The town was platted in 1856 and named for General James K. Polk, who had won fame as a general during the American Civil War. In 1907, Pasco became part of Puget Sound metropolitan area and lost its independent status. In 1970, it merged with Thurston County to form the current incarnation of Pierce County. In addition to its economic value as a center for government and retail services, Pasco also has an important cultural significance because it is home to two Native American tribes: the Duwamish Tribe and the Chinook Nation. Pasco was founded in 1854 as part of the Whitman Settlement and became a city in 1911. It was named for General George Armistead Pasco and his wife Julia on May 1, 1912. The first white settlers arrived in Pasco in 1854 and platted the area around what is now downtown Pasco. The community grew rapidly due to its location along Puget Sound and access to timber resources. In 1911, when Seattle became an independent city, Pasco joined it as one of its wards. In 1951, the City Council passed an ordinance creating a waterworks system that would provide potable water for both cities from Lake Union. The first water main was installed in 1957

The city became a port on the Duwamish River and grew rapidly due to its location along the river's navigable sections. In 1853, Pasco was incorporated as a town, and in 1886 it became a city.
