The United States Air Force has been deploying gift baskets and other items to members of the Puyallup community for many years. The air force donated various items in commemoration of World War II, Christmas, and other special occasions. In 1951, the first gift basket was delivered to the town by the United States Air Force. The basket contained a variety of items such as candy bars, cigarettes, and books. Gifts were also sent in honor of military service members who had died in action. Since then, the air force has contributed a number of different gifts to Puyallup residents. In 2006, they donated a large quantity of canned goods in memory of fallen service members from World War II and during Operation Desert Storm. In 2009, they delivered a package filled with clothing and accessories to help locals wear better during winter weather conditions. This year’s donation is made up of an assortment of items including hats, gloves, coats, scarves and more. The gift is designed to support local businesses that have partnered with the Puyallup Chamber of Commerce in order to promote economic development within the community. Puyallup was founded in 1851 as a small town on the eastern shore of Puget Sound. The town was originally named after Captain Pierre-Jacques Puyallup, who sailed from Quebec in 1792 on the USS Discovery to explore the Northwest coast of North America. The town's success as a commercial center led to it becoming an important political and cultural center during the 19th century. In 1932, Puyallup was renamed for General George Custer following his death in battle at Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument near present-day Topeka, Kansas. The name change helped make Puyallup one of the most historically significant communities in Washington state.

The population of Puyallup increased from 3 during the 1800s to over 35 in the early 20th century. By 1910, there were only 10 residents left in the small town.
