Puyallup, Washington is a town in King County, Washington, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 34. Puyallup is located on Puget Sound east of Seattle and north of Tacoma. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Puyallup were the Vancouver Expedition in 1792. The town was founded by Captain George Wigglesworth and his wife Mary in 1851 as Wigglesworth Landing on the east side of Lake Washington. It became a city in 1907 when it annexed part of the neighboring town of Tukwila. When President James K. Polk sent American forces into Asia to help Japan during World War II, Puyallup played an important role with its naval squadron based at Naval Base Kitsap on Puget Sound. After the war, some residents decided that they no longer wanted their bright commercial lights shining down on them from Kitsap County while others decided to keep their smalltown feel by voting to annex nearby Des Moinesville in 1951 after citizens there voted to secede from King County. In 1962 the City annexation resulted from a vote by the voters over whether or not to allow for annexation by Olympia because that city had been rapidly growing without any annexations and was about to exceed 1 million people within 10 years; however, Olympia never annexed due to objections from some residents who felt that it would take away their slice of downtown business development which they considered valuable cultural heritage and agricultural land along with other concerns about growth such as traffic congestion and air quality problems caused by automobiles running on high-sulfur fuel stocks). In 1984 there was an attempt to rename Puyallup after Admiral Tom Farragut who served aboard USS "Herald" during World War II before becoming Commandant at US Naval Academy where he led military engineering students who constructed several warships including USS "Linda J." In 1995 Mayor Dan White announced plans for redevelopment which involved demolishing most if not all buildings within the original settlement leaving only a few small homes standing today as part of what is now known as Pioneer Square Development District (PSDD). Puyallup, Washington is a small town located in the state of Washington, United States. The population was 1,826 at the 2010 census. Puyallup is home to the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Naval Air Station Kitsap-Everett. The town also contains two libraries, one public and one private. The first meeting of the Town Council was held on January 7, 1875 in a log cabin which was then used as a schoolhouse. The original town site were located east of present-day Puyallup on the south side of Puget Sound between Everett Island and Walla Walla Island. In 1881, lumberjacks discovered coal deposits in what is now downtown Puyallup and began mining operations. By 1886, when incorporation became law, there were six businesses in downtown Puyallup including three stores: A & W Grocery; J & G Tailor Shop; Thompson's hardware store. Coal production continued through World War I until 1919 when it came to an end due to wartime restrictions on coal exports from the United States. In 1925, an act authorized creation of Kitsap County as well as Puyallup County within it with land north of Sequim Bay included in Kitsap County and south of Olympia on Bainbridge Island included in Puyallip County. On November 3rd 1928 a fire destroyed part of downtown Puyallup but no damage was done to any other buildings or property resulting from that event Bishop John Haggerty served as first Christian priest for all residents of what is now Kitsap County from 1927 until his death in 1957 On October 15th 1949 Bishop Haggerty dedicated St Joseph's Catholic Church at 1015 SW 2nd Ave., which still stands today
