The first permanent European settler in what is now Puyallup was Jameson Stevenson who arrived in 1835. He built a log cabin on the current site of the Town Hall. In 1837, he married Anna Maria Snively and they moved to what is now Pioneer Square. The first post office in town was established in 1839. In 1861, Puyallup became an incorporated town when it merged with neighboring Unalaska and Sammamish townships. In 1911, construction began on the western end of Boeing Field which would become one of North America's largest airfields with over 2 million square feet (210,000 m2) devoted to agriculture and aviation production alone by 1944 when it became known as "Pioneer Valley Air Force Base". At its peak during World War II the base operated more than 50 military aircraft factories including 12 B-24 Liberators type XXI bombers; 11 C-47 Skytrain transports; 4 A-20 Havocs; 3 P-38 Lightning fighters; 1 BT-9E Superfortress bomber; 15 PT-6S Tutor trainers; 6 F4U Corsair fighter planes and 14 E4U Corsair torpedo planes. On November 1, 1854, Puyallup was first incorporated as a town in Kitsap County. The original plat of the town was filed on October 15, 1855. The post office was founded in 1860 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1905, the entire Kitsap Peninsula became part of the newly created Washington Territory. On January 3, 1907, Puyallup incorporated as a city with a population of 100 residents. It remains an unincorporated community today.
