Puyallup is a small community in the state of Washington located on the Olympic Peninsula. The population was 7,853 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Bellevue-Everett, WA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Puyallup comes from an Alaskan word meaning "a place where salmon run." In 1851, John Wesley Powell and his party set out from Fort Vancouver to explore the Columbia River system and its potential for gold mining. They discovered what would become Puyallup's first town site when they found artifacts dating back to 1792 near present-day Puyallup High School. After several years of exploration and discovery, Powell's group returned with reports of great riches hidden within these waters. On July 15, 1855, representatives from twenty-six Northwest Territory towns met at Mount Vernon in Olympia to discuss plans for a new territory called Puget Sound County. The idea for creating a county government came about due to concerns about land ownership within the newly formed Territory. George Vancouver became its first sheriff and decided to create a county seat in what is now Everett because it would be easier for him to handle justice than having to travel through every town in each district he served as sheriff. The development of Everett was slow due to lack of capitalization on the part of local businesses and citizens alike; however, by 1865 there were already substantial construction projects underway such as Tacoma's incorporation as a city and Everett becoming an agricultural center with wheat being one of the primary crops grown thereabouts. With growth came more people, jobs and problems which eventually led to Everett becoming too large for its own good and annexed by Tacoma in 1907. Today much remains unchanged from when these communities were founded over 150 years ago--the natural beauty around them notwithstanding!

Puyallup is a small town in Washington, located on the Olympic Peninsula. The population was 3,859 as of the 2010 census. It lies within the Puyallup School District. The first permanent settler in what is now Puyallup was John McLoughlin in 1810. He built a cabin on the hill above the present day town hall, and named it Fort McLoughlin after his Irish War hero father. A few years later, another man by the name of Porter erected a log cabin on land that still stands near present-day Interstate 5 south of town. In 1834, George Wickersham bought much of what is now north side of town from Porter for $1 cash and built Wickersham's Store which still stands today across from modern day Pacific Highway 5 east of town. In 1865, James Sibley came to live in Puyallup and opened his store at 6th Street and State Route 99W (now I-5). He became an early advocate for industry in this region and also developed irrigation systems for farming purposes which helped to feed the burgeoning city of Seattle during its growth spurt during that time period. Sibley also donated land to build Pierce Community College in Tacoma and he served as one of its first trustees. In 1870, settlers from Oregon arrived at Port Orchard and began homesteading along Indian River beachfront property immediately west of where Puyallup now sits. That same year saw construction begin on what would become known as "The Great Northern Railway" line between Everett and Seattle; dedicated by President Ulysses S Grant on July 12th 1870 were two logging railroads: The Centralia & Puget Sound Railroad Company (later renamed Western Union) ran down Ridge Road just outside current-day West Olympia while TheSeattle & Puget Sound Railway Company reached through Eastsound to connect with TheGreat Northern Railway at North Bend just south of where we are presently sitting; both lines were built with money provided by their respective company founders Mrgrs Haldeman & Smith who had recently purchased large blockades around Everett to prevent overbuilding on their own lands there! 2 miles northwest from where we are currently sitting stood Terminal Station #1 for US Airways until its closure in late 2009 due to budget cuts by then airline CEO David Denny
Puyallup was founded in 1847 by Peter C. Manson and his wife, Nellie. The first post office was established in Puyallup on July 1, 1847. In 1862, the town became part of King County. In 1898, Puyallup was renamed after General George Washington Ballou.
