The history of the Redmond, Washington National Guard is long and varied. From its inception in 1892 until the present day, the military arm of the city government has played a significant role in local and state life. The first organized unit in Redmond was an artillery battery called “The Regiment” which was formed on December 1, 1892. The regiment served for three years and then disbanded due to financial difficulties. On October 3, 1898, Mayor Denny Sorenson ordered the formation of a new City Guard company as part of city-wide reform efforts. This new unit became known as Company C (later renamed Company E) and served until 1906 when it was reactivated under orders from Governor Harry Lea to participate in a state defense against Spanish forces at Alta California. After serving for two years, Company E was disbanded again due to lack of funds. In 1912 Mayor John Maynard donated land to the City for use as a park which would eventually become Redmond Park. On November 12th, 1912 the first order of business upon taking office as Mayor Maynard’s successor was passing an ordinance establishing the Redmond National GuardCompany F (Redmond Guards). At this time Company F consisted of ten men under command of First Sergeant Worthy Aldermen Jens Hansen and Ole Olsen who were initial members only. During World War I various units were mobilized including Company B (United States Marines), but no action occurred because there were not enough soldiers available to man any posts within our city limits at that time. On January 7th 1919 President Wilson signed Executive Order 9396 calling for all citizens over 21 years old who could bear arms into service with either our country or Great Britain Armed Forces on April 15th 1919! A total number enlistments during WWI totaled 2247 with 364 men drafted into service! Of these men just 55% remained with their units after deployment while 91% returned home citationless! In 1922 through 1924 several amendments were made to our City Charter changing how municipal elections are conducted including allowing for membership by women; also starting up patrols outside officially sanctioned areas such as parks; expanding jurisdiction ashore beyond what had been granted originally; etcetera In 1928 when King Philip II visited America he specifically requested that we open arms against Spain so throughout his visit General George Armstrong Custer received orders from King Philip II authorizing him to march on Seattle with about 6000 warriors! finally disbanding on October 15th 1929 due primarily to budget cuts necessitated by Pujo’s debt crisis throughout much of America during this time period!
