The Seattle Air National Guard's (SANG) 145th Airlift Wing is responsible for the airlift of dignitaries and other visiting military and government officials to and from local airports throughout the Puget Sound region. The wing has a rich history dating back more than sixty years, when it was formed as the 153d Bombardment Group in October 1942. During World War II, SANG served with distinction as part of the Allied forces in both Pacific theaters of war. In 1945, SANG moved to Seattle and became one of the city's first civilian airlift services. The wing continued its important role during the Cold War, providing humanitarian assistance to victims of conflict including famine in Cuba, Nicaragua and Yugoslavia; supporting Operation Neptune's Spear which led to North Korea's collapse; and providing aerial refueling support for United States Marines fighting in Southeast Asia. Today, SANG provides vital airlift services within our region including transporting personnel, equipment and supplies to local airports across King County. The name “Seattle” was chosen because it had been suggested by Lieutenant Colonel John Condon of United States Army Corps of Engineers during his tour of duty at Fort Point on Tacoma Island when he saw a large white Swan at Sea-Tac Airport. The present day downtown areas were developed after World War II when companies such as Microsoft began moving their operations there for military production needs such as fighter planes and missiles. Today’s skyline includes several high-rise buildings that are home to some of the world’s tallest skyscrapers including One Microsoft Place (formerly known as CEO Tower) at 553 feet (170 meters), Yurt Park (an open air park adjacent to Lake Union) at 438 feet (130 meters), Rainier Hall (the headquarters building for King County Superior Court) at 555 feet (175 meters), Pioneer Square (a district located east of downtown that contains many popular tourist attractions) at 476 feet (160 meters), Gig Harbor at 1117 feet (−500 meters), Kent Center Mall at 901 feet (−500 meters), Northgate Center mall at 777 feet (−500 meters) and Discovery Millenium Parkadee Cove—a 0 acre (.24 hectare) marine reserve that offers views over Elliott Bayou into Puget Sound—at 825 feet (−300 meter). Today, Seattle has one million residents who work in its metropolitan area which totals 2 million people within five counties: King County (+1 million; Bellevue/Everett (+650K); Tacoma/Puget Sound (+700K); Thurston County (+950K); Snohomish County (+2M). These two million people contribute more than $100 billion each year to local economies across five jurisdictions – king county sales tax ($21 billion; municipal property tax ($11 billion; income taxes alone ($10 billion)); school levy ($8 billion)) plus hospital district levies ($6 billion)). The metropolitan area employs 119,000 workers according to 2016 figures published by HITB SEIU Local 1130 relations with other employers statewide reaching 198,000 jobs statewide with wages averaging $57 per hour worked with benefits averaging $15 per hour worked – ranking fifth among all large Umpqua Valley cities along with Eugene + Register Guard(+19K); Salem + Springfield(+16K); Bend + Redmond(+12K)); Hood River + Coeur d'Alene(+9K).
The United States Air Force deployed gift historian to various countries during different wars. The Air Force has a long and proud history of sending comfort and support to our allies in need. From the World War II era through the present day, the USAF has sent numerous gifts to help those in need. One of the most famous deployments was from 1945-1946 when the USAF sent a shipment of over 1,000 artichokes to Japan in response to their bombing of Hiroshima. These artichokes were also given as a gesture of sorrow for what had taken place. The gift was so well received that it continued being donated by the USAF until 1998! Another deployment occurred during Operation Desert Storm in 1991 when air force personnel transported food and water parcels to Kuwaiti citizens living under Saddam Hussein’s rule. This act of kindness went unheard by many people due to hishumane treatment of his own people! Finally, we come back to Operation Christmas Tree in 2013 which involved delivering 4,000 books and toys to Syrian refugees who were living on an airstrip near Raqqa. This donation gave hope and solace to these individuals who had been facing such harsh circumstances since before hostilities began! It is clear that the United States Air Force has a long history of giving back something special every time they deploy someone or something important into another country. Through this gift history, we can see how much compassion and love is put into every decision made by these officers and women!
