Since the late 1800s, when Seattle was a small town, the city's military forces have been deployed in support of operations throughout Washington and Oregon. The Puget Sound area has seen regular deployments of artillery and infantry units since World War II, with most recent deployments taking place during Operation Neptune's Spear in Afghanistan in 2009. Seattle's military history goes back even further; King County was one of the first counties in the United States to form an army unit, the 1st Battalion (RCA) Infantry Regiment. The battalion served as part of American Expeditionary Forces in Europe from 1919-1921. In 1924, King County formed its own regiment—the 9th Infantry Regiment—and mobilized for World War II. The regiment served at Normandy and Iwo Jima before being sent to Japan where it fought in the Battle of Okinawa. After returning home, the regiment participated in exercises at Fort Lewis before being disbanded on May 15, 1945. The Seattle Army National Guard also has a long and proud military history dating back to 1892. That year, Seattle City Council approved establishment of a volunteer guard company made up entirely of citizens who were then able to enlist into local units should they become needed for emergency purposes such as riot control or public safety during carnivals or other large events. On October 25, 1862, Queen's Rangers under command of Captain John Litherland attacked Confederate batteries near what is now Greenwood Cemetery on Elliott Bay Side after seeing smoke rising from their position on Paine Hill across Elliott Bay from Union Arsenal munitions dumpster factory which had been surrendered by Confederates days earlier without any fight or resistance! This action marked the first successful engagement by Queen's Rangers against Confederate troops anywhere within territorial boundaries…later that day Litherland was promoted captain and given command responsibility for all ranger actions east of Elliot Bay! In 1917 while serving with VII Corps headquarters near Arromanches beachhead France Lieutenant Colonel George Wickersham organized and led seven companies totaling over 270 men south along railway line between Le Mans and Orléans then through Arromanches into Brittany region crossed canal Saint Martin River went via Falaise Head Quarry reached German lines northwest d'Artois village Château-Thierry about 4 miles west side destroyed 10 buildings 12 POWs 2 Officers & 14 enlisted men killed including Captured LtCol Wickersham himself
