The Seattle Army and Navy Club is one of the oldest military clubs in the United States. It was founded on November 9, 1884, by Captain John W. Sellwood as a means of providing an opportunity for officers and enlisted men of the Seattle Legion Artillery to socialize and share information. The club quickly became something more than just a place for officers to hang out; it soon developed into a center for political and social activity. In 1917, the club donated its facility on Union Street in downtownSeattle to the city government as part of a park project. The club's first president, Captain Harry Prentice,served until his death in 1935. After his death, Mr. Henson took over as president until his retirement in 1957. Through many changes and additions over the years, the Seattle Army and Navy Club has become one of America’s most active military organizations with chapters located throughout North America as well as Europe and Asia. In recent years membership has increased both among servicemen and civilians alike because of its ability to provide opportunities for networking both within society at large as well as with other similar organizations across different branches of service worldwide.
