The first Europeans to visit what is now Seattle were traders from Asia who discovered rich land on Puget Sound in 1692 during their explorations of northwest America. The name "Seattle" was given to it by Captain George Vancouver after he sighted a small island near present-day Elliott Bay while sailing for British Columbia during his 1792 expedition across Canada's Pacific Northwest coast. At first, Vancouver considered naming the settlement "New Westminster", but changed his mind due to objections from members of the local Native American tribe known as the Duwamish people; they viewed New Westminster as a symbol of European colonialism and wanted their own town built nearby where they could live peaceably with their neighbours. In 1851, when Territorial Legislature voted 4–1 to incorporate Seattle as a city, this act made Seattle one of only six cities in Washington Territory (the others being Tacoma, Olympia, Richland Park), and set off a historic period in which Seattle helped shape national politics and culture. In 1855 Microsoft founder Paul Revere founded what would later be called Revere House at 1200 Fourth Avenue NE – today’s Federal Building – when he moved his family from Boston after receiving news that British troops had burned down part of Congress Hall there two years earlier during Queen Victoria’s Canadian Invasion expedition against United States independence movements known as The War for Independence (1812–1815). He named his land Cascades because of the tall trees that grew there. On January 6, 1847, Vancouver made an official Declaration of annexation of Puget Sound Territory with present-day Tacoma County as its part of the territory. On July 16, 1850s lumber baron James Lacey donated property southeast of downtown to become Pioneer Square which served as the first commercial center in what is now Seattle when it opened its doors to merchants on December 15th
