Seattle, Washington is well known for its coffee culture and coffee shops. The city has been home to many roasters and cafes since the 1800s. Seattle's coffee history starts with a modest shop called the Dutchman Coffee House on 7th Avenue North in 1887. This store was started by John Glover, who also founded the first grocery store in Seattle. In 1907, the owners of The German Coffee Shop moved to Seattle from Tacoma and opened a very large business at 4th and Pike streets. This business became known as one of the most prestigious cafes in town. In 1928, Harry Juhl opened his famous Juhl’s Coffee House on Capitol Hill which quickly became one of the most popular tourist destinations in Seattle. Juhl was an early advocate for quality beans and roasted them himself rather than purchasing them from other roasters. His coffee house became known as a haven foreducated professionals and their families during the Depression years. In 1951, Bob Metzger reopened his old bakery on Union Street as Metzger's Coffee House with talented artist Don Freeman serving as head brewer and art director. The café continued to serve delicious cup of Joe until it closed in 1978 due to financial reasons. However, it is still remembered fondly today thanks to its beautiful architecture and tasty cup of Joe! In 1984, Starbucks opened its doors in Seattle after winning a bidding war over two others proposals for the location-one located near CenturyLink Field (nowite) while another proposal centered around Boeing Field (now CenturyLink Arena). At first Starbucks served onlyKOA cups of java but soon introduced iced tea, hot chocolate,Frappuccinos (a blend of cold espresso beverages),epicorins(high-quality TurkishTurkish strong ales),and full flavored lattes including soy milk (the first time this type of drink was offered at an American institution). The popularity of Starbucks led other small businesses to open up within minutes or hours adjacent to or across from their stores starting what would become known as 'The Subway scene'. By 2003 there were over 1,000 Starbucks locations worldwide! Today Starbucks continues its legacy by offering free wifi throughout their stores worldwide!

He brought these beans back to Boston and started selling them as coffee. In 1850, Mr. Robey founded the first successful espresso machine in America at his shop on Quincy Market in Boston. Coffee became a popular social beverage during the 19th century because it was associated with luxury societies such as those led by Napoleon Bonaparte or William Pittthe Younger. It was also used for medicinal purposes such as treating headaches or asthma. By 1830, more than one million pounds (454 kilograms) of coffee had been exported from Europe to American ports alone! Coffee houses attracted droves of fashionable people who would meet for conversation and study under bright lights; some considered this type of society an essential part of early modern life! During World War II, many consumers turned to caffeine-free substitutes like chocolate milk to help make ends meet during wartime shortages caused by rationing programs instituted by the military authorities
