Coffee beans were brought to Sedro Woolley by wagonloads from the nearby Java Mountain Coffee plantation. In 1916, the first commercial espresso machine was installed at the local grocery store. Some people say that this was the beginning of Sedro Woolley's "coffee culture." In 1951, a small grocery store on First Street opened its doors to sell coffee and other food items. This store is now known as its namesake - Sedro Woolley Coffee & Tea Company. In 1957, an additional grocery store was built across First Street from the original store and became known as the "Third World" Store because it sold everything from rice to cigarettes.
