The name Sedro Woolley may be derived from "Sedrus concolor" or "Sedrus idahoensis". Woolley's first permanent settler arrived in 1879, when Lewis M. Smith and his family started an agricultural operation near present-day Sedro Woolley. The town was platted in 1881 by George Atherton and named for woolen manufacturer Sedro Woolley & Company. By 1905, wool production had ceased due to overpopulation and the growth of other nearby towns. In 1908, Sedro Woolley incorporated as a city under Washington state law No. 1184. It remained an unincorporated village until it became part of Everett on January 1, 1959; however, it remains listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a historic community.
