The first military unit to stationed in Sedro Woolley was the 9th Infantry Regiment of Washington County, Oregon on July 1, 1851. The regiment served for three years and then moved to Fort Hall where they remained for one year. They then returned home to Portland and garrisoned a post at the now defunct Tomahawk Bend Ranch until 1861 when they were replaced by the 3rd Infantry Regiment of Oregon Territory. The 3rd Infantry Regiment arrived in Sedro Woolley on February 14, 1861 and soon became part of the 7th Infantry Brigade under General Ulysses S. Grant’s command. They fought during the Siege of Hood’s Mill which began on April 12, 1861 and ended on May 11th after a successful assault against Confederate forces entrenched at Bentonville Hill. Aftermath saw 4 men killed, 36 wounded, and over 100 captured including Generals John Custer and Winfield Scott who were both fatally shot while surrendering their sword to General Johnston. Returning home from his service with the 3rd Infantry Regiment in Kentucky General George Armstrong Custer led his 5th Cavalry Division into battle against Sitting Bull on October 25 1876 near Wounded Knee National Monument celebration site located about 20 miles north-west of Sedro Woolley along State Road 26A. In what is considered one of America’s most dramatic cavalry engagements Custer's force narrowly avoided annihilation as Indian Chief Crazy Horse's band engaged them for six hours before withdrawing inside their own country without loss or casualties
